AmChamIntel: Tariffs 2.0
AmCham held its second Intel session on US trade policy with AmCham VP of Macro Martin Skrehota of Carrier and Sahra English, the Managing Director of Citibank's Global Government Relations on August 6th.
The overview centered around certainty. How much did the satchel of trade agreements really create? Did the deal with the EU set the upper limits for tariffs, or the new baseline for further negotiations and announcements from both sides? Will negotiators be able to bring the political deal to a legally binding policy? How will European leaders, and Europeans in general, respond if they learn that the certainty they hoped for is actually only a little less uncertainty? How will Americans react when they discover that they in reality will pay for the higher tax on imports? Has the situation improved enough to persuade companies to make decisions about where to place their next investment?
